The commute to work, a conversation with a friend, getting lost in a maze of tiny streets of Spain, seeing the colors change with the seasons, noticing the pawns in a game called Life. This is where I get inspired. My vision as an artist is to capture the world around me using my own vocabulary of bold colors, vivid lines, and ambiguous spaces.
In my work I confront dark, sinister subject matter. I try to do it fearlessly, and with a healthy dose of humor. When I portray buildings, I treat them as if they were portraits; I try to find their character. When I look at landscapes, I see fields of color and how each color interacts with all the others creating perspective.
I begin with a black canvas. It enriches the colors of oil paint. I divide the canvas into spaces, like a mosaic. I apply rich colors in layers using brushes and a palette knife. The brush strokes come to life. Mixing colors on the palette and on the canvas produces a thick, raised texture in the oil.
